Pregnancy is sometimes accompanied by morning sickness, back pain and difficulty sleeping. In some cases, hypnosis can reduce these symptoms without having to resort to medications.
Medical hypnosis is also useful in children and adolescents. Often children are quite highly hypnotizable. As with adults, it can be used for phobias, anxiety, pain control, habit disorders, and smoking cessation. In children, the hypnosis is often a part of a more comprehensive treatment plan. We do not undertake hypnosis without the patient's knowlege and consent.
There are different styles of hypnotic induction. Sometimes we will try several approaches to determine which feels most comfortable for a particular patient. If possible, the individual learns self-hypnosis to use between sessions. We teach people to use two different approaches. There is a longer practice for when there is a block of free time, and a quick induction for use in public situations or for when there is a time crunch. Although we prefer to work independent of audiotapes, we will make up custom tapes for individuals who have difficulty doing self-hypnosis between sessions.
Our clinic includes a psychiatrist who has experience with the use of medical hypnosis in both children and adults. We prefer not to use hypnosis for recovery of memories or for forensic situations.
